Newport is in fact the largest conurbation in the county of Monmouthshire in South Wales. The area is rich and fertile, and has sustained a varied agriculture throughout its history. Since the 18th century however, its rich mineral resources were plundered by coalmines, and the heavy industry of power production for the start of the industrial age took precedence over farming.

For centuries the county of Monmouthshire's ownership has been disputed between Wales and England, much as the Border county of Northumberland has been disputed between the Scots and the English for centuries. This dispute of boundaries is based on economic recourses and wealth as a rule, and both here in Monmouthshire and in Northumberland, this was the case.

The wealth that ancient mineral deposits and an accessible harbour brought to Monmouthshire are evident today in the fine houses and buildings that suffuse the county. Tredegar House is a superb example of the style of wealthy estate developed in the area. Built in the 1500's originally, it was rebuilt in the 17th century by William Morgan, of the same family as the infamous pirate of the Caribbean, Captain Morgan. Today the property is owned and maintained by the City Council, and can be visited throughout the year. The Tredegar Vintage Car Rally takes place annually, in aid of leukaemia research.

Newport is famed for its colourful nightlife, including the urban myth that Kurt Cobain proposed to Courtney Love in one of the alternative music clubs. The city's appeal spans from rock royalty, to knighted wealth: The first Welsh billionaire, Sir Terrence Hedley Mathews, was born here, and now uses his great wealth in the area.

The Wetlands lie on the edge of the municipality with over eight hundred and thirty five acres of land, encompassing salt-water lagoons, reed beds, scrub, grassland, and wetland. It is a sanctuary for many native species of bird, and annual avian visitors to the temperate shores of South Wales. It is a habitat of gracious proportions for many protected species of flora and fauna, including dragonflies, otters and rare native orchids.

Visiting the area is exceedingly simple, with the M4 from London to Wales passing just a mile from the town, and Cardiff International Airport and Bristol Airport both within easy commuting distance. However you get to us, there is a Newport Hotel to suit any budget and any need.

Newport not only has a vibrant club and music scene, historical buildings and fine stately homes to visit, but also great shopping with all the usual big high street brands, plus a two storey Victorian Provisions Market.

The Celtic Manor Resort is the brainchild of Sir Terrence Hedley Mathews, the billionaire son of the city, and offers state of the art conference facilities, and will host the Ryder Cup in 2010.
